How to Spread Lime in the Yard

Whether resodding your yard, growing a fresh lawn from scratch or trying to get grass to grown in an area that has died off -- spreading lime may be the solution to the problem. Lime is an inorganic material that contains calcium, oxides and carbonates. In landscaping and lawn care, lime is used to help neutralize soil that has high acidic contents. Neutralizing soil by spreading lime helps facilitate grass growth. Lime can be spread with a push spreader.

Instructions

  Read the usage instructions on the back of the bag of lime that will be spread. The amount of lime to be spread depends greatly on the area that needs to be treated. Typically, approximately 40 lbs. of lime for every 1,000 square feet of lawn.

  Open the bag of lime and add the amount called for into the push spreader.

  Set the spreader swath, at the bottom of the spreader, for about 1 1/2 feet if covering a smaller area. If spreading lime throughout the entire yard, set the spreader swath to 5 feet.

  Push the spreader in a straight line, walking the area to be covered until the lime is spread.
