How to Decorate With Uneven Backyard Ground

Rather than seeing an uneven backyard as a detriment to your garden plans, work the dips and hills into landscaping schemes. While dips in the yard do need to be addressed for safety purposes to avoid sprains, if not broken bones, they can also be used as focal points in the yard, such as a place for a fountain or small sunken garden area.
  1. Ponds and Fountains

    • Use large basin areas to create small ponds or erect fountains. Create small ponds that feature koi or goldfish, or purchase a fountain for the area. Use larger, tiered fountains as a centerpiece for the backyard or go for smaller versions as a hidden treasure inside a shade garden. You can also turn fountains of any size into wishing wells for friends and families to drop coins in.

    Small Hills

    • Use small hills in your backyard as decor points. Place small yet sturdy sculptures, such as sitting Buddhas, on top of rounder hills; use a small garden shovel to flatten the hilltop as needed. Create a fairy garden around small hills, as hills are considered gateways to fairy homes, according to myth and legend. Purchase fairy doors from garden decor sites and arrange small flowers and other decor pieces, such as glass orbs, to create fairy homes.

    Rock Gardens

    • Fill uneven spaces in your backyard with pebbles and stones. This works not only as a safety measure to alert guests to uneven areas on your lawn but can also serve as the base for a rock garden. Combine large and small rocks, smooth pebbles and even beach glass in sunken areas, then place rocks and boulders of varying sizes and shapes around or near the pebble-filled dips. Use ornamental grasses and small bushes in your rock garden if desired or leave the garden as is.

    Pocket Gardens

    • Fill dips and basin-like areas with assorted flowers to create "pocket" gardens. Combine tall and short flower varieties or stick to one of each, such as filling a large dip with iris, astilbe and other tall and brush flower options. Going the opposite route and filling dips with fragrant ground cover-type flowers, such as lily of the valley, is another option. Use an array of different flower colors to create colorful pocket gardens or stick to one color per garden.
