Use the shovel to prepare the soil to a depth of 2 inches.
Rake the soil until it is fine and level. As you rake, occasionally roll the soil over and under. This ensures a firm bed.
Remove all visible weeds.
Water the bed thoroughly, and then wait two weeks before planting. Because tilling of the soil stimulates new weed growth, this two-week interval will give you the opportunity to remove the inevitable new weeds.
Sow the seeds at a rate of 4 lbs. of seed per 1,000 square feet, either by hand or with a garden planter. Be sure you spread evenly.
Cover the newly sown seeds with 1/2 inch of soil or compost.
Water thoroughly after planting.
