Lightly rake the lawn area and ensure that the ground is level. This creates the flat, even base for your lawn. Rake level any small hills and fill in any dips so the ground is on an even plane.
Check your chosen seed --- the packet will have the recommended amount of seed per 1,000 square feet. This will help you determine the right amount of seed to use with the seeder.
Divide your seed in half. Set the broadcast seeder to the appropriate seed amount for your chosen grass seed type and fill with half the grass seed. Walk in a systematic way over all of your lawn, spraying the grass seeds evenly as you go. Ensure all the lawn is covered.
Turn 90 degrees then refill the seeder with the remaining seeds and cover the entire lawn area again. Completing a two-step planting in this manner ensures all the lawn area is evenly covered in seed.
Rake over the seeded area to cover the seeds with around 1/4 inch of soil. Once the seeds are tilled into the soil with the rake, water the lawn well with the hose. Water once a day for two weeks after seeding.
