The Best Time of Day to Water New Sod

Watering is an essential component to growing sod. The roots need to be kept consistently moist so they can grow and spread to the soil below the sod. Without too little or too much water, new sod will brown and die.
  1. Timing

    • Water new sod in the early morning because the wind is low and there is less evaporation. Between 4 and 8 a.m. is ideal, but anytime before noon is fine. Mid-day watering is not advised because most of the water will evaporate. If you wait until the evening, there's a higher risk of disease.

    Frequency

    • Keep the sod consistently moist by watering it once or twice a day. The entire piece of sod should be wet, but the soil underneath should only be damp, 1 inch deep. If you water too much, the grass won't grow well. So, avoid saturating the soil.

    Pointer

    • Pick up a corner of the sod to check the moisture level. If the grass and soil are too wet, wait some time before watering again. If the grass is dry, add more water.
