Feed new sod that was planted in the spring during the following September. Sod planted in the fall should be fertilized the next May.
Feed the new sod a grass fertilizer blend containing a nitrogen-potassium-phosphorus ratio of 12-12-12. Apply 1 lb. of nitrogen per 1,000 square feet. Spray a hose over the lawn after fertilization to lightly water it.
Wait to fertilize new sod as the grass strengthens and attaches to the soil beneath, which typically is 30 to 60 days. Lift the sod to determine if the roots have attached to the soil.
