The Best Time in Spring to Plant Grass in Tennessee

Planting a successful Tennessee lawn requires site preparation, care and choosing the appropriate time to sow the seeds. Kentucky bluegrass, tall fescue, orchardgrass and timothy grass are cool-season perennial grasses that grow well in the state.
  1. Timing

    • Tall fescue and timothy grass can be sown as early as February 1 and no later than April 1 in Tennessee. Orchardgrass prefers a planting time no earlier than August 15. Kentucky bluegrass should be planted in early spring, when the soil temperatures are close to 60 degrees Fahrenheit. This is the peak time for the species' root growth.

    Considerations

    • Give grass seeds sufficient time to become established before the heat of summer sets in. Early spring planting ensures they will be strong enough to handle the harsh conditions.

    Potential

    • Improve the soil to help the grass grow better. Test the soil. If it has a pH of less than 6.0, amend it with lime six months before planting. Follow the soil test recommendation for application rates. Regardless of soil type, spread 40 lbs. of nitrogen per acre at planting time as fertilizer.
