How to Make a Hummingbird Feeder With Copper Tubing

Hummingbirds are a delicate and pretty addition to your garden space. The birds feed on sugary nectar, which you can easily make in your own kitchen. Making a homemade hummingbird feeder to hold the sugar water is a simple project that you can accomplish with items from around the house. The body of the feeder is a recycled plastic bottle, and a piece of copper tubing provides the gravity-controlled feeding mechanism.

Instructions

    • 1

Rinse a plastic water bottle or soda bottle and cap in clean water. Let them drip dry.

    • 2

Drill a hole in the cap with a 7/16-inch drill bit on an electric drill. Cut 1/4-inch copper tubing to a length of 6 inches with a saw.

    • 3

Sand the cut edges of the copper tubing with 220-grit sandpaper until they are smooth. Bend the tubing at a 40-degree angle, two inches from one end.

    • 4

Squeeze a bead of hot glue around the shorter end of the bent tubing and insert it into the hole in the bottle cap. Apply another bead of hot glue around the tubing on the inside of the bottle cap and let it dry.

    • 5

Pull a silk flower off its stem and dab hot glue around the free end of the copper tubing. Slide the middle of the silk flower onto the copper tubing and let it dry.

    • 6

Fill the bottle with sugar water and screw the cap into place. Wrap the bottom of the feeder in wire or twine and hang it from a tree or post in your yard.
