How to Make a Fountain Smoke Machine With a Water Mixture

You can use a water mixture of hot water and dry ice to create a great smoke machine effect in an indoor or outdoor fountain. This is great for entertaining or a spooky addition to a Halloween decoration setup. You'll need to do some quick calculations and plan ahead to get the best effects as the smoke may only last 30 minutes to two hours.

Things You'll Need

  • Large bucket
  • Dry Ice (up to 100 lbs.)
  • Large ice chest
  • Fountain
  • Hot water (up to 80 gallons)
  • Heavy work gloves

Instructions

Determine roughly how many gallons of water the fountain holds and circulates. Some fountains may have this listed on a manual or on the back of the fountain. You can use a 5 gallon bucket to empty out the water and multiply the number of times you fill the bucket by 5 to find out how many gallons you will need.

Place a large amount of dry ice in a large ice chest until ready for use. You will need about 10 pounds of dry ice for every 8 gallons of water. For example, if the fountain holds 36 gallons of water you'll need around 40 pounds of dry ice.

    • 3

Empty the fountain of any water. Fill it with hot water until the fountain is mostly full. Ideally you want to wait until just before putting the dry ice in before filling the fountain with hot water.

Put on heavy work gloves and quickly pick up and move the dry ice into the fountain. For best results place pieces of dry ice in different sections of the fountain. Keep some dry ice in a chest to add more over time as the smoke effect diminishes.
