How to Construct a Wooden Trellis

A garden trellis is an important part of any garden because it provides necessary support for climbing plants. Plus, it gives vertical interest to the landscape.Trellises are useful in vegetable and flower gardens and there is a wide array of styles from which to choose. They can be freestanding or attached to another structure. Wooden trellises can be made from pressured treated lumber, cedar or redwood.

Instructions

  1. Plan the Design

    • 1

Decide how large a trellis you desire and whether it will be freestanding or attached.

    • 2

Sketch your idea on paper. Determine dimensions of overall structure. Vertical lath pieces should be 6 to 8 inches apart.

    • 3

Figure the amount of lumber necessary to complete the project. Purchase enough lath pieces (1 x 2s) for the number of verticals needed and for at least three horizontals. Freestanding trellises will need 2 x 4s long enough to bury the posts 16 to 18 inches deep in addition to the planned length of the trellis. Attachable trellises need 2 x 4s the length of the verticals.

    • 4

Gather materials and tools. If your trellis is large, consider building it close to the site where it will stand as it will be heavy and cumbersome to move.

    Building the Trellis

    • 5

Measure the lath strips for the vertical legs and cut according to dimensions.

    • 6

Measure and cut the horizontal strips. You will need three - one at the bottom, one two-thirds the way up, and one 2 inches from the top.

    • 7

Lay the 2 x 4s on a flat surface narrow side touching each other. Attach the horizontals to the 2 x 4s. Horizontal pieces should extend 1 1/2 inches beyond the 2 x 4s. (The 2 x 4s serve as the side rails.) Use exterior grade glue and 1 1/2-inch deck screws.

    • 8

Fasten the vertical pieces using glue and 1-1/4 inch deck screws to the horizontal members. Screw in at each junction.

    • 9

Paint, stain or seal unit with exterior grade product or leave to weather naturally. For freestanding unit, dig holes and install in ground with concrete footings. Attach hanging trellis to structure with suitable hardware.
