Instructions

    • 1

Build a mold for the stepping stone. Decide what size the stone should be, and cut 2x4 lumber to size. A good size to try casting is 10 by 16 inches. Assemble the four walls by setting the 2x4s on edge, matching up the corners and screwing them together with wood screws.

    • 2

Lay a sheet of plastic, like a garbage bag that's been cut open, on a flat surface like a concrete driveway or garage floor. Set the 2x4 concrete mold frame on top.

    • 3

Collect some interesting leaves and lay them inside the mold on the plastic. Move the leaves around to create a pleasing composition.

    • 4

Pour some ready-mix concrete into a plastic trough. Add water to it, per manufacturer's directions. Mix together with a garden hoe.

    • 5

Use a shovel to scoop the wet concrete into the mold. Be careful that the leaves don't move or get distorted. Fill the mold with at least 2 inches of concrete.

    • 6

Allow the concrete to set up for 1 to 2 days. Unscrew the mold and pull the side boards away.

    • 7

Turn the stepping stone over carefully and peel away the leaves. Don't worry if all or part of the leaves stick. They will be worn off soon enough by the affects of the weather decomposing them.
