How to Mount a Cast Iron Bell Outside

A cast iron bell can be a wonderful addition to the yard. It can provide a utilitarian service such as to gather the family together at the end of the day, or it can be used as a focal point by providing the element of sound to the yard. Cast iron bells come in a multitude of sizes. The best way to mount one outdoors depends largely on the size of the bell and what you plan to use the it for in your yard.

Instructions

  1. Attaching a cast iron bell to your house.

    • 1

Mount a wrought iron arm to the side of the house, using a drill and screws.

    • 2

Attach the bell on the end of the arm, using bolts and nuts to fasten.

    • 3

Attach the exterior hammer to the bracket with a length of chain, if the bell doesn't have a built-in clapper.

Attaching a cast iron bell to a post.

    • 4

Dig a hole at least 2-feet deep in the yard at the designated location, using a post hole digger or a shovel. Make the hole at least 8 inches around, to allow for enough cement around the base of the pole.

    • 5

Insert a pressure-treated wood pole or a wrought-iron staff into the hole and fill the hole with cement mixed with water. Check for plumb--a vertical straight line--several times while the cement is hardening.

    • 6

Attach the yoke to the bell, using bolts and nuts to hold the bell securely in place.

    • 7

Mount the base of the yoke to the top of the pole, using screws. If you have a curved wrought-iron staff, mount the bell directly onto the staff with bolts and nuts. Tighten the bolts with a wrench.
