Do-it-Yourself Stone Wall Edges

Stone walls can help define property lines and barriers. The safest way to construct a stone wall edge is with mortar. Mortar helps bond the stones together so they do not topple in high winds. When stones are mortared, you can build walls taller and straighter than walls without mortar. Building a stone wall is a labor-intensive project, so take your time and have a friend or two help you out.

Spread mortar over the tops of the first layer of stones with a trowel. Work in small sections. Set a second layer of stones on top of the first layer into the mortar. Stagger the joints of the second layer over the joints of the first layer. Check that the stones set level.
