What Is in Scotts Fertilizer?

Scotts Fertilizer is a synthetically produced formulation that aids in the growth of lawns, vegetable plants and flowers. Percentages of main ingredients vary according to the specified purpose. Trace minerals are present in specialized formulations.
  1. Urea

    • Urea is the main ingredient in all of the company's fertilizers. When in solid white crystalline form, urea is nutritious to a wide variety of grasses and plants. Misuse or a too-high concentration of this nutrient can result in burning of vegetation.

    Secondary Ingredients

    • Potassium chloride and ammonium phosphate are the next most important components. Potassium chloride helps plants resist stress and pest infestations. Ammonium phosphate helps plants properly utilize the energy needed for photosynthesis and use water efficiently.

    Iron and Manganese

    • Ferrous sulphate is the form of iron present in fertilizers. It helps plants make chlorophyll even when the underlying soil is deficient in iron. Manganese, while present only in small quantities, is important because it prevents freckling, grey spots and pale leaves.

    Other Minerals

    • Trace nutrients are present in some, but not all of Scotts formulations. These elements include sulfur, copper, zinc and molybdenum.
