Turn off the water to the sprinklers by turning the two ball valves on the side of the brass sprinkler breaker outside the house 90 degrees clockwise.
Locate the Hunter sprinkler head that you want to remove. All Hunter sprinklers are marked with the word "Hunter" on the top.
Remove the dirt around the sides of the sprinkler with a shovel. Remove enough dirt to get your hand around the sprinkler body.
Grab the sprinkler body with one hand and firmly turn it counterclockwise to loosen it. Continue turning the body counterclockwise until it pulls free from the plastic sprinkler riser connecting it to the pipe underground.
Turn the plastic riser counterclockwise to remove it from the connection point on the supply pipe.
Insert the PVC plug into the hole on the supply pipe. Most Hunter sprinklers require the use of a 3/4-inch supply line, as they are generally larger sprinklers. This means you will likely need a 3/4-inch PVC plug to cap the line. However, some low-flow Hunter models use 1/2-inch connections, so the plug in that case would need to be the same size. If you are unsure of the required plug size, take the riser to the hardware store for comparison.
Turn the PVC plug clockwise by hand until tight. Use an adjustable wrench to finish tightening the plug, being careful not to tighten the plug to the point that the plastic pipe threads strip from the pressure.
Bury the connection point with dirt and mark, if desired, with a yard flag to identify the hole for later use.
