Uses for the Herb Basil

Basil typically is used as an herb in cooking but also is widely used in traditional medicine and Ayurveda. Basil has anti-bacterial, antiviral and immune enhancing properties. You can easily grow basil in your garden and enjoy its many benefits.
  1. Diabetes

    • Basil is used to help people with diabetes. The herb is high in antioxidants which help lower the glucose levels in the blood. Take a teaspoon of basil juice daily or mix it in salads or other dishes.

    Kidneys

    • Basil helps regulate kidneys functions and relieve kidney stones. A mixture of equal parts basil leaves and honey will help you pass kidney stones within six months

    Colds

    • If you are looking for relief from the common cold, make a mixture of honey, ginger, and basil leaves. One teaspoon of each liquid and some basil leaves will help cure and relieve cold symptoms as well as influenza and asthma.

    Stings

    • Basil is used in Ayurveda medicine to help treat poisonous snake bites and insect stings and bites. Mix the leaves, roots and the flowers of the basil plant and apply to the affected area. Make sure to see a doctor if the condition does not improve.

    Food

    • Basil has a sweet, peppery taste that complements many different vegetables. Sprinkle basil in your tomato sauce and over salads. Basil often is used in stuffing for chicken or added to soups like lentil and split pea soup.
