Spray a broad spectrum herbicide that contains glyphosate over the lawn area. Glyphosate kills weeds without leaving toxic soil residue that can harm bentgrass seeds. Reapply the spray in 10 days. Wait two weeks to plant bentgrass seed.
Spread a starter fertilizer over the soil to help root development. Use a starter fertilizer that has an NPK ratio of 5-10-5 at a rate of 20 lbs. per 1,000 square feet. Work the starter fertilizer into the first 2 to 3 inches of top soil.
Water the soil. Pour half of the recommended amount of bentgrass seed into a drop spreader. Distribute bentgrass seed at a rate of 1/2 to 1 lbs. of seeds per 1,000 square feet. Push the drop spreader horizontally over the soil. Add the rest of the seeds to the drop spreader to apply vertically.
Apply 50 lbs. of compost per 1,000 square feet over the bentgrass seed to help conserve moisture. Water the lawn until the soil is moist, but not saturated.
Water the germinating bentgrass two to three times a day. Reduce the watering schedule to once a week when seedlings emerge, which generally takes five days.
