How to Purchase Zoysia Grass Plugs

Zoysia grass spreads easily through its underground rhizomes and stolons. Planting zoysia seed is a viable option, but many homeowners have difficulty starting grass from seed. Sod is another option but sodding a lawn, especially with a high quality grass like zoysia, can be an expensive endeavor. Planting sprigs is a more economical option, but can take several seasons to fill in. Plugs, on the other hand, may be the perfect solution. It is less expensive than sodding and usually provides complete coverage in two growing seasons. Before purchasing your zoysia grass plugs, you must choose a dealer, and decide how many to buy and at what time of year.

Locate a reputable nursery or sod farm through which you can purchase your zoysia grass plugs. Ask friends and family members to share their experiences with retailers in the community. Also evaluate any warranties that may come with the grass to help you decide where to purchase them. Zoysia plugs are also available for purchase online, if desired.

Calculate how many zoysia plugs you need for your lawn. Plugs are planted six to 12 inches apart in a diagonal grid. According to Missouri State University, if you space plugs six inches apart, you will need 4,000 plugs for 1,000 square feet of space. For plug spacings of 8 inches, you'll need 2,250 plugs and for 12-inch spacings, you'll need 1,000 plugs. Remember, the closer they are planted, the quicker they will fill in.

Purchase zoysia plugs in the spring or early summer depending on the climate. The temperatures should be warm but not too hot. Fall is not a good time to purchase and plant plugs because they will not have enough time after temperatures cool to become established before winter.
