Reduce the frequency and scope of controlled burns. While these prescribed fires have a sound environmental purpose insofar as the release of nutrients from dead flora is concerned, they also emit toxic gases such as carbon monoxide into the air and atmosphere. Adopt alternatives such as plowing for similar benefits that stimulate new grass yet will not pollute the air.
Advise neighboring farmers to evaluate their fertilizer use. Chemical fertilizers find their way into aquifers and adjacent water supplies, making them less potable for wildlife. Switching to bio-fertilizer reduces such despoiling.
Monitor nearby mining and industrial activity for adherence to environmental regulations. Hazardous materials can easily leak out in transport or by means of an accident in the facility. Report any evidence of this to local authorities. Lobby your lawmakers if regulation of this nature is lax or ineffective.
Form voluntary associations, in cooperation with the government and landowners, of individuals who will police the grasslands for litter and debris left by safari-goers and other recreational tourists. Advise the visitors about the environmental consequences of carelessness with regard to dumping garbage or swimming in rivers with sunscreen on.
