How to Remove the Front Wheel on a Cub Cadet

Cub Cadet lawn and garden tractors were first built in 1960 by International Harvester. The wheels of a Cub Cadet are designed for rugged and sustained use during mowing and other heavy garden projects. Cub Cadet wheels are also designed for expedient removal to get the tractor back in service as quickly as possible after maintenance or repair. The job requires a few tools and basic mechanical ability.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Position the Cub Cadet on level ground. Shut off the engine and remove keys from the ignition.

    • 2

Install wheel chocks on either side of the rear wheels to prevent the tractor from rolling forward or back.

    • 3

Remove the front wheel hub cap with a flat screwdriver. Place the flat tip of the screwdriver where the edge of the hubcap meets the wheel and pry it off.

    • 4

Place a hydraulic bottle jack under the frame near the wheel to be removed. Raise the tractor until the wheel clears the surface by 2 or 3 inches. Place a jack stand next to the bottle jack for added support and safety.

    • 5

Remove the cotter pin by first bending the lower pin legs straight using combination pliers. Cotter pins are made from soft metal and bend easily. Once straightened, pull out the pin from the axle with the pliers.

    • 6

Remove the flat wheel retaining washer from the axle by hand. The wheel is now free to be removed from the axle.
