Craftsman 3.75 HP Tiller Troubleshooting

Soils that are compacted or do not have enough aeration or organic manner need to be tilled. Tilling breaks up soil clumps and allows you to incorporate manure or compost into the soil. The Craftsman 3.75 horsepower tiller is a tiller with a lot of power. It can break through large clumps of soil and work greater distances than smaller units can. Although powerful, the tiller may have its moments of bad performance. Proper troubleshooting will help you isolate the issue.

Instructions

  1. Will Not Start

    • 1

      Check the fuel level and fill the tank to the top if the tank is empty. Remove fuel that is over a month old and replace it with fresh gas.

      Set the choke to the "start engine" setting.

      Rest the engine for several minutes if the engine sounds like it may start, but won't turn over. This means the engine is flooded.

      Press down on the spark plug to ensure it is properly installed. Inspect the plug for signs of rust or dirt and replace it if necessary.

      Unscrew the air cleaner cartridge and inspect it for dirt. Replace the cartridge if necessary.

      Remove the cover for the air filter using a screwdriver. Inspect it for oil. Replace the filter if it is saturated.

    Power problems

      Adjust the depth stake at the front of the machine if the unit is overloaded at the tines from digging too deep. Set the blades to a shallow depth.

      Unscrew the air cleaner cartridge and replace if you have sudden drops in power.

      Inspect the fuel for signs of oil. Drain and clean the fuel tank and refill.

      Blow off the engine air screen with an air compressor.
