How to Rewind a Bolens BL150

The Bolens BL150 is a gas-powered string trimmer that lets out fresh line by lightly tapping its bump head on something solid. The trimmer then trims the fresh line with the use of a built-in razor in the cutting attachment shield. Unfortunately, the BL150 does not have an unlimited reservoir of fresh line. Every so often the line runs out and the owner needs to rewind the Bolens BL150 with new trimmer line.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the cutting spool from the drive shaft, following the instructions in the manual that came with the BL150.

    • 2

Grasp the bump knob and unscrew it counterclockwise while holding on to the outer spool. If the threads on the bump knob are damaged, discard the bump knob and replace it with a new one.

    • 3

Pull the inner reel out of the outer spool. Remove the spring from the inner reel.

    • 4

Clean all the parts with a shop rag and inspect for damage. Remove any burrs from the teeth on the inner reel with a small file if necessary. If any of the parts are damaged beyond repair, replace them with new parts.

    • 5

Slip one and of a 10-foot length of split trimmer line through the oblong hole in the inner reel from the inside of the reel. Pull approximately 6 inches of line through the oblong hole. Feed the same into the other oblong hole next to the first hole. Pull the long portion of the 10-foot line tight, securing the line to the inner reel. Split the first 6 inches of the long end of the line. If the inner reel has round holes, feed one end of a 20-foot length of trimmer line into one hole from the outside of the inner reel and the other end of the line through the hole next to it from the same side. Pull the ends through the reel until the trimmer line is tight on the reel.

    • 6

Wind the line around the inner spool in tight, even layers, following the directional arrow on the outside of the inner spool. Ensure that the line is wound tight and does not overlap by using a finger to hold the line down on the inner reel while winding it.

    • 7

Clip the end of each line into one of the slots in the inner reel. Put the spring back in the inner reel. Slip one line through each of the islets in the outer spool. Slide the inner real into the outer spool. Hold the inner reel and the outer spool together while pulling the end of each line to release it from the slots in the inner reel.

    • 8

Secure the inner reel to the outer spool by threading the bump knob clockwise into the assembly until it's tight.

    • 9

Replace the cutting school, following the directions in the owner's manual.
