How to Troubleshoot a Yard Machine Riding Lawn Mower

MTD makes a series of riding lawn mower called Yard Machine. The Yard Machine riding mower functions like most other consumer model lawn tractors, with an engine in the front of the unit and a mower deck beneath. All parts need to work in conjunction for efficiency. Regular maintenance of your Yard Machine, as outlined in the owner's manual, will usually prevent breakdowns. However, problems may occur as your machine ages. Proper troubleshooting will help you isolate the issue.

    • 3

Lift up the seat of the unit and check the connections to the battery terminals. Attach the large, red solenoid to the "Pos" or "+" terminal and the black to the "Neg" or "-" terminal.

    • 4

Lift up the cover of the battery cells and check the fluid levels. Fill the battery with distilled water up to the fill line.

    • 5

Check for loose fuse connections in the fuse box on your machine. Replace fuses as necessary.

    • 6

Check the engine frame for a black grounding wire. It should lead to a mounting bolt at the back of the unit. Reattach the wire if necessary.

    • 7

Check the gas tank and fill to the top.

    • 8

Pull out the oil dipstick and wipe clean. Dip the stick again and inspect the oil level. Fill the crankcase with the oil recommended in your owner's manual.

Remove the air filter cover and inspect the air filter. Remove it and replace if dirty.
