How to Create Texture on Hypertufa Pots

The stone look of hypertufa provides a rustic and natural element to your garden planters. You can purchase hypertufa pots or make your own from cement combined with natural elements, including peat, sand or coconut coir. The fibers or sand combined with the cement results in the stone-like appearance. Adding texture to the pots after it is finished further adds to the attractive appearance while also providing a rough surface that allows moss to grow on the planter for an even more-natural look.

Instructions

    • 1

Line the mold with a plastic garbage bag. The folds and wrinkles in the bag provides a slight textural element to the dried hypertufa. Mix the ingredients and water, and add them into the mold as you normally would.

    • 2

Chisel along the natural lines caused by the plastic using a metal chisel or a slotted screwdriver after removing the pot from the mold but before the final curing period. Draw the blade of the chisel along each line with firm, steady pressure.

    • 3

Scratch a textured design into the hypertufa using a sharp nail. Make swirls, concentric circles or geometric designs, as desired.

    • 4

Scrub the sides of the pot with a stiff wire brush. Draw the brush up and down or side to side for a linear design, or move it in circles for a more-natural uneven texture.
