- Two straight knitting needles, US size 3 (3.25mm)
- Worsted weight yarn (light grey or desired color), approximately 100-120 yards
- Tapestry needle
- Measuring tape
- Using your straight knitting needles, cast on 36 stitches.
- Knit 1x1 ribbing for 2 inches (approximately 12 rows).
- Knit: Insert the right needle into the first stitch on the left needle, bring the yarn to the front of the work, and wrap the yarn around the needle from left to right. Pull the new loop through the old loop on the left needle.
- Purl: Insert the right needle into the first stitch on the left needle, bring the yarn to the back of the work, and wrap the yarn around the needle from right to left. Pull the new loop through the old loop on the left needle.
- Switch to knitting in stockinette stitch (all knit stitches) and continue for 2 inches.
- At the beginning of the next row, knit 8 stitches, and then slip the next 2 stitches onto a holder (this will be the thumb gusset). Continue knitting the remaining 26 stitches.
- Knit the hand, continuing in stockinette stitch for 5 inches (or desired length).
- Begin decreasing stitches one at a time on both sides of the work, at regular intervals, to shape the hand. Start by knitting two stitches together, and then repeat these decreases about every 6-8 rows, until you have 20 stitches remaining.
- At the beginning of the next row, knit 2 stitches, then slip the next 6 stitches onto a holder (this will be the forefinger).
- Knit 6 stitches, then slip the next 6 stitches onto a holder (this will be the middle finger).
- Knit the remaining 6 stitches (this will be the ring finger).
- Knit each finger separately, using the stitches you slipped onto the holders previously.
- Knit each finger for 1.5 inches, then begin decreasing stitches as in Step 4, until you have 2 stitches left.
- Cut the yarn, leaving a long tail, and thread it through the remaining stitches. Pull to close.
- Weave in any loose ends to secure your work.
- Sew up the cuff and side seams of the gloves using a tapestry needle and matching yarn.
- Sew on the thumb gusset using a tapestry needle and matching yarn.
