How to Use a Scarifier

Scarifiers are mechanized pieces of landscaping equipment with varying numbers of sharp toothed blades used to cut, loosen, aerate, grind and scrape ground material including weeds, lawns, sports fields, asphalt and other semi-soft surfaces. Scarifiers are often used when resurfacing or replanting ground covers and come in residential size and the larger, more powerful commercial machines.

Instructions

  1. The Steps

    • 1

Release the throttle and draw or drive the scarifier along the surface with the tines extended down to scrape against the material, loosening it, churning it and lifting up in pieces.

    • 2

Make multiple passes across the surface with the scarifier to complete the job as desired. The number of passes required will depend on the material to be abraded, the number of blades or tines and size of the scarifier and the area to be covered.

    • 3

Rake, shovel or use agricultural equipment such as a combine to pick up the scarified material and cart it away.
