DIY Terra Cotta Birdhouses

Birdhouses are often constructed out of pieces of wood, which are hammered into familiar house shapes. Although this is the most common form of birdhouse construction, wood does not hold up as well as other materials when exposed to outdoor conditions on a regular basis. One solution is to make a birdhouse out of terracotta, which does not become damaged from constant precipitation or direct sunlight.

Instructions

    • 1

Select a terracotta pot from a garden supply store that contains a hole in the bottom that is at least 2-inches wide.

    • 2

Decorate the outside of the terracotta pot using waterproof acrylic paint. Paint the pot a single color, or paint on pictures or patterns to suit your taste. Consider using stencils.

    • 3

Insert a hot glue stick into a hot glue gun, and plug the gun into an outlet to heat up for five minutes.

    • 4

Squeeze a line of hot glue around the perimeter of the mouth of the pot.

    • 5

Press the glued mouth onto a wooden board that measures 8 inches square. Allow the glue to cool completely, and then nail the board to a fence or to the side of your house.
