How to Construct the Easiest Compost Bin

Compost bins enable you to obtain black crumbly earth from organic materials you might otherwise throw away, contributing to the waste stream that fills landfills. You can purchase or make your own elaborate compost bin. One of the easiest designs though goes together quickly and provides good airflow for your compost materials.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut 8-foot timbers into 4-foot sections or have a lumberyard do this.

    • 2

Clear a level area measuring 4 by 4 feet to set up your compost bin. Set two cut timbers, flat side down, parallel on the ground about 3 1/2 feet apart from each other.

    • 3

Stack two more timbers, flat side down, on top of the first two timbers to complete a square. Continue stacking the remaining timbers in this pattern to create a bin a little more than 3 1/2 feet square and about 4 feet high.

    • 4

Add leaves and grass clippings as well as kitchen scraps other than meat and dairy products.

    • 5

Pull the timbers apart at the start of the new growing season. Move the compost to your garden and start over.
