How to Level a Swing Set

Many times, you need to place a swing set on uneven ground, where the legs cannot rest on a level plane. This can be frustrating because it diminishes the utility of the swing set and can even be dangerous if the set tips over. One of the first things you should do when you set up a swing set is make sure you level it properly.

Things You'll Need

  • Level
  • Fill dirt
  • Pea gravel, sand or wood chips

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the location where you intend to place your swing set. Try to choose the most level area possible and remove any large stones or tree roots that you find there.

    • 2

Set up the swing set in the intended space. If you need to anchor it, dig holes deep enough for the anchoring to take place, but do not set the anchors yet. You first need to adjust the swing set if it is not level.

    • 3

Measure the placement of the swing set with a level. It should tell you which end is lower than the others and generally how much you need to raise that end until the swing set is level.

    • 4

Place fill dirt under the swing set leg that is off balance, and pat it down tight so that it doesn't have any give in it. Adjust the exact amount of dirt by periodically rechecking the level, making sure that the swing set is properly balanced.

    • 5

Secure the swing set to the ground once you have determined that it is as close to level as possible. Double-check the level each time you anchor a leg of the swing set to make sure it doesn't shift while you work.

    • 6

Examine the ground around the swing set, looking for any divots, holes or inclinations of the surface. Though the swing set may be level (allowing the swings to move safely and freely), the ground may not be safe if it is uneven or bumpy.

    • 7

Lay pea gravel, sand or wood chips around the swing set, creating a "padded area" where children can fall without injuring themselves. Use additional amounts of whatever material you have chosen to fill in any divots, or level off any inclinations. You can use the level on the surface of the material to check if it is balanced.
