Options for a Deck Shade

Shading a patio or deck can enhance its functionality by providing a place outdoors where you can relax out of the sun. There are many different types of deck shades available. Choosing the right kind of shading will not only add comfort but also allow your backyard or patio to become an attractive accent to your home's exterior.
  1. Umbrellas

    • Perhaps the simplest and often the cheapest option for deck shading is a patio umbrella. Larger than a regular umbrella, deck umbrellas fan out to protect a small area from direct sun. Umbrellas are offered in a large range of sizes, colors, and shapes. Most are constructed from durable fabric that breathes to allow heat to escape while keeping the sun's rays out. One of the primary advantages to umbrellas is that they are lightweight and can be moved anywhere on the deck or in the yard.

    Retractable Awnings

    • Mechanized retractable awnings are ideal for areas where sun is desired at certain times but not others. A retractable awning can be mounted to the side of your house and features a motorized roll-out canvas shade. A simple press of a button, and the mechanism extends the shade to cover your deck. Another push retracts it and lets sun in. The primary advantage to retractable awnings is that they can be contained and thus protected throughout the winter.

    Shade Sails

    • Shade sails are typically triangular pieces of fabric that stretch between three fixed points to offer shade and protection from UV rays. Shade sails are a sleek and modern alternative to traditional umbrellas or awnings. Shade sails are most often made of high density polyethylene. Shade sails are available in a wide array of colors and can be mounted almost anywhere. Re-enforced grommets add durability and strength. Shade sails can be hung from existing structures or from poles set into the ground.
