How do I Build a Grape Vine Arbor?

Build a grapevine arbor in your garden not only to help support your growing grapevines, but to add beauty. You can build your grapevine arbor as an archway for your garden entrance or you can build it with a bench for visitors to your garden to sit on. Whatever design you choose for your grapevine arbor, make sure it is sturdy and something the whole family can enjoy.

2-by-2 lumber
1 sheet of lattice
1-by-6 lumber
2-by-4 lumber
Staple gun with staples
1 ¼-inch finish nails
2-inch wood screws
Table saw
Hammer
Drill with bits

Instructions

  Cut all the pieces for your grape arbor: eight lengths of 2-by-2 measuring 90 inches; two pieces of lattice measuring 12 inches by 80 inches; two pieces of 1-by-6 lumber measuring 48 inches; and five lengths of 2-by-4 measuring 33 inches for the top of the grapevine trellis.

  Lay out two of the 90-inch 2-by-2s flat on the ground. Top with one sheet of the lattice. Use a staple gun to hold the lattice in place.

  Line up the remaining 90-inch lengths on top of the lattice and screw them to the lengths on the bottom to create one side of the grapevine arbor. Repeat with the remaining 90-inch lengths and lattice.

  Stand up the sides on their long edges about 48 inches apart. Set one of the 48-inch-long 1-by-6 supports flush with the top of the grapevine arbor. Use the wood screws to secure each side of the support in place.

  Flip the grapevine arbor over and add the second support to the top on the other side.

  Position the top portions on the top of the arbor trellis. Place one in the middle and place two at 8-inch intervals on either side of the middle. Use the wood screws to hold the top portions in place.

  Stand up the grapevine arbor and place it wherever you want. Plant grapevines along the lattice sides of the grapevine arbor so they can grow up the sides.
