How to Hang a Cedar Bird Bath or Feeder

Having a birdbath or bird feeder in your backyard is truly a gracious way to give back to the animal kingdom. A birdbath and bird feeder offer birds a ready source of water and nourishment for drinking, bathing and eating on days when water or food might not be readily available, and when birds might not have the energy to search for them. Cedar birdbaths and bird feeders will seem like they're extensions of nature, more organic than man-made. Hanging bird feeders and birdbaths will heighten this impression, as they sway gently in the wind as naturally as a tree branch.

Instructions

    • 1

Fill your cedar bird feeder with the appropriate seed. If you're hanging a cedar birdbath, wait until it's hanging to add water.

    • 2

Walk around your yard. Select a tree that has sturdy, lower branches jutting out from it. Hold the cedar birdbath or bird feeder up against the center of the branch you've selected. When hanging, the bird feeder or birdbath should be accessible to you, yet not likely to hit you in the head when you pass by. Ideally, it should be about the height of your shoulder or neck.

    • 3

Drill a pilot hole into the center of your selected branch. Brush away the wood chips from the hole and screw in a metal screw hook deep into the tree.

    • 4

Hold your cedar bird feeder or birdbath by the hook or loop at the top of the three-point chains or cords that support the feeder or bath. Slide the loop or hook onto metal screw hook you just inserted into the tree branch.

    • 5

Place a set of pliers around the hook part of the metal screw hook you installed in the branch. Squeeze your pliers so that thry bend the metal of the screw hook and the hook becomes a closed loop. This will prevent your cedar bird feeder or birdbath from flying off the tree in strong gusts of wind. Add the appropriate amount of water to the birdbath.
