How to Build a Box Planter on Casters with a Lattice

Decorating your outdoor space with planter boxes does not have to cost a fortune. You can make your own box and add casters to the bottom to move the planter without stressing your back. Adding a lattice wall to the back of the planter allows you to grow vine-type plants for extra height in the garden space. Once you master the basic pattern, experiment with the measurements to adjust the size for your specific needs.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure then cut four square side panels for the planter: two should be 15 1/2-inches square and two 14 3/4-inches square.

    • 2

Cut the planter bottom to measure 13 7/8-inches square.

    • 3

Measure and cut four pieces of wood for the top edge, measuring 17 inches by 3/4-inch by 1-1/2 inches.

    • 4

Cut four ledge pieces to hold the bottom onto the planter: two with a measurement of 14 inches by 3/4-inch by 3/4-inch and two pieces measuring 12-1/2 inches by 3/4-inch by 3/4-inch.

    • 5

Assemble the side panels and apply wood glue along the edges to hold them in place. Attach the pieces together with two 1-inch long screws along each edge.

    • 6

Glue the top trim pieces onto the top of the sides so there is no overlap on the inside edge. Nail three 1-inch long brad nails to secure each piece to the planter.

    • 7

Affix the ledge piece with wood glue about 3/4-inch from the inside bottom edge of the planter. Secure the ledge by nailing three 1-inch long brad nails along each side.

    • 8

Drill five 1/4-inch drainage holes evenly around the bottom planter piece. Slide the bottom piece into the planter so it rests on the bottom ledge.

    • 9

Screw one caster wheel unit into each bottom corner of the planter.

    • 10

Cut the lattice to a width of 14-1/2 inches and a height of 4 feet. Place the lattice on one inside panel of the planter and attach it with eight to 10 brad nails to hold it in place.
