Rattan Facts

Rattan is a vine like plant with a hard but durable outside and a softer, porous inside. Rattan vines are found in the jungles of Southeast Asia, and can grow as long as 600 feet. When the outside of a rattan vine is stripped away, the inside is processed and sold to basket and furniture makers around the world.
  1. Where Does Rattan Grow?

    • There are over 500 species of rattan that grow naturally in countries throughout Southeast Asia. The Philippines, Indonesia, Vietnam and Thailand are all rattan producing countries.

    How is Rattan Harvested?

    • Rattan is cut by local farmers into 12- to 15-foot lengths using machetes. It is then sent to processing areas where it is washed, smoked and dried by the sun to remove moisture. The rattan is then stripped into usable pieces.

    Is Harvesting Rattan Sustainable?

    • Buying rattan furniture is eco-friendly and sustainable. Because rattan is a vine, not a tree, it grows quickly. With a constant supply of rattan, there is no worry about harming the environment or running out of resources.

    What is Rattan Used for?

    • Rattan is used by furniture and home accessory makers. Because rattan is both flexible and strong, it makes sturdy and attractive accessories and seating.
