There are over 500 species of rattan that grow naturally in countries throughout Southeast Asia. The Philippines, Indonesia, Vietnam and Thailand are all rattan producing countries.
Rattan is cut by local farmers into 12- to 15-foot lengths using machetes. It is then sent to processing areas where it is washed, smoked and dried by the sun to remove moisture. The rattan is then stripped into usable pieces.
Buying rattan furniture is eco-friendly and sustainable. Because rattan is a vine, not a tree, it grows quickly. With a constant supply of rattan, there is no worry about harming the environment or running out of resources.
Rattan is used by furniture and home accessory makers. Because rattan is both flexible and strong, it makes sturdy and attractive accessories and seating.
