How to Install Granite Benchtops

A granite benchtop is a strong and attractive topping to any stone bench, whether indoors or out. Since granite is known for its strength and longevity, once you've glued it into place, you'll have a finished product that will stand the test of time, lasting decades while other materials crumble around it. Since the installation only requires the application of a bit of glue, it's quick and uncomplicated, taking only minutes to attach the benchtop to the legs.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose a setting for your bench. Measure the dimensions of the benchtop and then use those measurements to place the legs so that the top will overhang the front and back of the legs 2 inches, and 6 inches over the outside point of the legs. Place the legs onto the ground and allow the weight of the stone to leave an indentation for about five minutes.

    • 2

Remove the legs and use a spade to dig up the indented area to a depth of about 2 inches. Compress the hole with a tamper. Add sand as a bedding material and compact it to 3/4-inch thickness with a tamping tool. Return the legs to the hole, then check that they're level with a carpenter's level. Fill in any gaps remaining around the legs with the sand.

    • 3

Spread beads of concrete adhesive over the tops of the bench legs where you plan to place the granite bench. Use a moderate amount of glue to ensure full coverage along the base of the bench at the leg locations. Spread the adhesive in the locations of the bottom of the benchtop where the legs will sit as well.

    • 4

Place the benchtop onto the legs, with the legs centered beneath the top. Make any minor adjustments necessary immediately before the glue takes hold and starts to set. Press firmly down on the granite benchtop after placing it and hold for about 30 seconds to allow the glue to begin binding the two materials.

    • 5

Wipe any excess glue from the bench legs using a damp piece of cloth. Allow the top to sit as the glue sets for 24 hours before using or moving the bench to a final destination.
