How to Make a Crocheted Hammock

Lounging in a hammock is a time-honored summer diversion. A lightweight hammock without a spreader bar is handy to roll up and stuff in a backpack for camping. You can crochet your own hammock from cotton or nylon cord. This hammock is worked mostly in double crochet stitches and chain stitches.

Things You'll Need

  • Cotton or nylon cord such as #20 bedspread weight cotton cord or 12-ply cotton/polyester twine: approximately 3,200 yards
  • Crochet hook: size K
  • 2 metal, plastic or wooden rings, 2 to 3 inches in diameter
  • 4 to 7 yards of clothesline cord

Double crochet in the second double crochet stitch from the hook. Chain 5. Skip the next double crochet and double crochet in the next chain 5 space. Continue chaining 5 and working a double crochet in the next chain 5 space until you reach the last two double crochet stitches at the end of the row. Double crochet in the last two double crochet stitches. Chain 3 and turn. This is the first of the net rows.

    • 8

Continue crocheting net rows as in the previous step until you have reached your desired length. Each net row will be approximately one inch. The net row portion of an adult-size hammock will be about 60 to 80 inches long, so you will have 60 to 80 net rows. At the end of the final row, chain 1 and turn.

    • 9

Skip the first double crochet and double crochet in the next double crochet. Chain 3 and double crochet in the next chain 5 of the previous net row. Continue working a double crochet and a chain 3 in each of the chain 5 spaces across the row until you reach the last two double crochets. Double crochet in the last two double crochets of the net row. Chain 3 and turn.

    • 10

Skip the first double crochet and double crochet in the next double crochet. Chain 1 and double crochet in the next chain 3 space of the previous net row. Continue working a double crochet and a chain 1 in each of the chain 3 spaces across the row until you reach the last two double crochets. Double crochet in the last two double crochets of the net row. Chain 3 and turn.

    • 11

Skip the first double crochet and double crochet in the next double crochet. Double crochet in each double crochet. Skip the chain 1 and double crochet in each double crochet. Continue across the row double crocheting in each double crochet and skipping each chain 1 to the end of the row. Chain 3 and turn.

    • 12

Skip the first double crochet and double crochet in the next double crochet. Double crochet in each double crochet across to the end of the row. Do not fasten off.

    • 13

Chain 30. Insert the hook into the metal, plastic or wooden ring. Pull up a loop. Yarn over and pull through both loops on the hook. This is a single crochet in the ring. Work 3 more single crochet stitches in the ring. Chain 30 Skip 10 double crochet stitches. Single crochet in the 11th double crochet. Repeat this step five more times until you have reached the end of the row. Cut the yarn 2 or 3 inches from the last stitch and pull it all the way through the loop to fasten off. On other crochet patterns you would weave the ends through the stitches but because the hammock will bear weight, tie the ends securely to the last stitches before weaving through.

    • 14

Attach the yarn securely to the first stitch of the other end of the hammock. Repeat the previous step to the end of the foundation row. Finish off securely.

    • 15

Cut the clothesline cord to a length that can be tied securely around the tree or hammock stand. Fold the section of clothesline in half. Insert the fold loop into the ring. Pick up the free ends of the clothesline and pass the free ends through the fold loop. This is called a girth hitch or cow hitch. Pull tight.
