Spider mums have shorter narrow petals on the inside that curve up and around the central disk of the flower to hide it from view. The outer petals are very long and narrow and stick out making the flower resemble a spider.
Spider mums come in a variety of colors. There are bronze, white, lavender and yellow spider mums. They also come in an unusual green color.
Spider mums require well-drained, rich soil that has a high acid level achieved by the addition of compost to the soil. They can grown in the ground or they thrive in pots filled with potting soil. All mums need at least four hours of sunlight per day. They also need water regularly.
The head of the spider mum frequently gets a little to heavy for the stem and will droop. They need to be staked and tied up to prevent this.
Spider mums are often used as cut flowers and will stay fresh up to two weeks in a vase. Decorate the table with a spider mum centerpiece mixed with other flowers or place pots of spider mums up the staircase leading to the front porch with a few pumpkins and gourds.
