Lime for Flowers

Adding lime to your flower garden raises the pH level of the soil, lowering the acidity and making it more alkaline. This is particularly well-suited to flowers that thrive in alkaline soil, such as azaleas and lilacs. Agricultural lime is available in bags at most gardening and home improvement stores.
  1. How to Apply Lime

    • Sprinkle lime gently onto the soil, digging it in gently with a hoe or spade. The amount of lime you use in your garden depends on your soil's existing pH level. If you're not sure of this level, test the soil using a home test kit (available at most garden store and county extension offices). Do not use both lime and fertilizer in the same garden during a 12-month period as the two create a toxic reaction.

    Flowers to Use Lime On

    • Use lime to enhance alkaline-loving plants, such as azaleas, peonies, trumpet vines, wisteria and lilacs.

    When to Apply Lime

    • Lime is best applied in the fall to give the nutrient time to work itself into the soil before the spring and summer growing seasons.
