How to Replace Chair Webbing

A well-strung web chair supports your body in comfort. Chair webbing, a woven polyester product, stretches from use, often because the original webbing strips were spaced too far apart to provide adequate support. Also, because much web chair use occurs outdoors, the webbing can weaken over time from sun and moisture damage. It's possible to purchase replacement plastic webbing in rolls at hardware and home improvement stores.

Instructions

    • 1

Examine the fasteners holding the old webbing in place. Use a box wrench to remove any nuts and a Phillips or flat-head screwdriver to remove any screws. Keep any good hardware and discard anything stripped, rusted or bent after finding same-size replacements.

    • 2

Pull the ends of each piece of webbing open so that the webbing lies flat. Measure the length of each piece, adding the measurements together to determine how many yards of replacement webbing you will need.

    • 3

Face the front of the lawn chair frame. Begin with the wrong side of the replacement webbing strip, which is the rougher, less colorful side, facing you. Place the point of the fabric strip over the screw or bolt hole on the back side of the top edge of the back frame of the lawn chair.

    • 4

Place a grommet on the first screw and screw it through the point of the first webbing strip. Wrap the strip around the frame until the right side of the fabric is facing you.

    • 5

Thread the strip under the center bar at the back of the seat of the lawn chair and back up through the seat. Wrap the remaining end of the first fabric strip over the front edge of the frame of the seat. Secure that end with a grommet and screw.

    • 6

Repeat steps 7 through 9 until all the long webbing strips are in place. Face the front of the lawn chair again and secure the first end of the first short strip. Weave the strip over and under the long strips and secure the other end. Repeat until all the short strips are secured.
