Making Distressed Furniture

Making distressed furniture at home can be a fun and innovative project. Taking new or used furniture and making it look old or worn has been used in design for many years. The design style, often called shabby chic, breathes new life into old or discarded furniture. It is usually easy to find items to distress at your local flea market, thrift store, or even the dump.

Instructions

    • 1

Use the electric sander to sand your entire piece. Wipe any dust off with a damp rag.

    • 2

Rub a crayon or wax over any place on your furniture you want the wood to show through.

    • 3

Paint your piece a color of your choice and allow to dry.

    • 4

Rub the steel wool along the places you covered the wax to remove the paint. Sand any edges you want distressed.

    • 5

Hit your piece with a hammer, chain, or a sock filled with nuts and bolts. This will make divots and dings in your piece.

    • 6

Use a rag with a complementing stain color to apply to any areas you want the wood to stand out. Rub any excess off.
