How to Build a Stable Coffee Table Base

Coffee tables are a piece of furniture commonly found in most living room areas. Some coffee tables are not built solidly and wobble or tip over. This is dangerous around children, pets and the elderly who may run into it. One solution is to build a stable coffee table base. A new base allows the builder to customize the table by using the top of the old table.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the top of the coffee table from the weak base and legs. Measure the top of the coffee table with a tape measure. With a carpenter’s straight edge and a pencil mark the measurements of the top onto a piece of 1-inch thick plywood. Another option would be to lay the table top upside down on the plywood and trace around the edge.

    • 2

Cut the shape of the top out of the plywood with a saber saw. Carefully follow the traced lines. Smooth the rough edges of the cut out plywood with sandpaper. Use the sandpaper to smooth the premade legs as well. Sand off all the paint or stain from the top before painting or the paint will not stick to the surface properly.

    • 3

Mark 1-inch from the edges of each corner of the plywood shape. Line up the legs and glue to the plywood with wood glue. When partially dry, flip the piece upside down. Secure the legs to the plywood using 3-inch long wood screws and an electric screwdriver. Use three to four screws to secure each leg and create a strong, stable base.

Attach the coffee table top to the legs with more screws. Patch all screw holes with wood putty. Once the wood putty is dry, paint the coffee table the desired color. Remember to stain the bottom as well.
