How to Build a Desk Out of Cabinets

Gather Materials:

- Two Cabinets (the same size)

- Four 1-inch wooden dowels

- Four steel L-brackets

- Eight wood screws

- Sixteen 3/4-inch wood screws

- Wood Stain (optional)

- Polyurethane (optional)

- Measuring tape

- Level

- Drill

- Wood saw

Step 1: Stain and seal the cabinet frames (optional)

If desired, stain and seal the cabinet frames before assembly to ensure they match and to protect the wood from wear and tear. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for the stain and sealant you are using.

Step 2: Assemble the desk base

1. Place one cabinet on its back.

2. Position the second cabinet on its front, so the fronts are facing each other.

3. Insert the four 1-inch wooden dowels into the holes in the side panels of the cabinets.

4. Using a mallet or hammer, tap the dowels gently until they are flush with the surface of the cabinet.

Step 3: Attach the L-brackets

1. Position one L-bracket on each side of the desk, aligning the holes with the dowels.

2. Secure the L-brackets using four wood screws for each bracket.

Step 4: Attach the desk top

1. Place the desk top on the dowels and L-brackets, ensuring it is centered and level.

2. Secure the desk top to the cabinets using eight 3/4-inch wood screws, driving them through the top and into the dowels.

Step 5 (Optional): Add finishing touches

- Install cabinet knobs or pulls

- Add a shelf to the desk

- Install castors for mobility

- Add an electrical power strip mounted to the underside of the desk
