How to Make a Pallet Chair for Two

Wood pallets contain strong wood, but are often cheap, which makes the pieces a good choice for do-it-yourself projects. Check for pallet distributors and wholesalers in your area or ask at local stores, which might give the pieces for free. A standard pallet measures 48 inches by 40 inches and two pallets contain enough wood to make a two-person chair. Use the finished chair as an indoor or outdoor piece.

  • Measuring tape

Instructions

    • 1

Stack the two pallets on top of each other. The 48-inch-by-40-inch size is too large for a standard chair. Measure 30 inches across the longest side of the pallet. Cut through both pieces with a circular saw, creating two pieces that measure 30 inches by 40 inches.

    • 2

Sand the edges of the wood with an orbital sander. Go over the top, sides and ends of each pallet, removing any imperfections and leaving wood that feels smooth to the touch. Tighten 2-inch wood screws through the last rung on the pallets, which increases the strength of the boards along your cuts.

    • 3

Set one wood pallet on the ground and place the second one perpendicular on top. Slide the top pallet forward 10 inches. Attach wood screws through the top pallet and into the pallet underneath. Keep one hand on the top pallet, as you screw through the wood and into the lower pallet. Place the screws every 2 inches across the top. This gives you an L-shaped piece that forms the base of the chair.

Find the ends you cut off the pallets. Break the wood apart with a crowbar. Slide the crowbar under the wood and apply enough force as you pull up that the wood breaks loose. Cut the boards into pieces measuring 4 inches by 4 inches.

Place one of the 4-inch-by-4-inch boards flat and cover the top with wood glue. Set a second piece on top. Stack four boards with glue in between each one and clamp. Repeat, making four different pieces of the same height and size, which serve as the legs.

Turn the chair upside down and drill a hole 2 inches away from each corner. Drill a 1-inch hole through the center of each wood leg block. Set the blocks on the ground and place the chair on top. Line up the holes on the chair with the holes in the block. Place a 4-inch bolt through the chair and into the leg hole. Tighten the bolt through the chair and into the leg. Repeat this step with each leg.
