Traditional Chairs

Traditional chairs follow the design principles of traditional style decorating. Traditional decorating usually refers to styles of the 18th and 19th centuries and sometimes adheres to a particular time period or country, like Empire, Chippendale, Louis XVI, Regency or Colonial, or mixes elements from different periods.
  1. Overall Appearance

    • Traditional chairs have an elegant appearance and tend to be large and plush. These chairs have a formal look with handsome details like carved wood legs or opulent upholstery fabrics.

    Wood

    • Traditional chairs are made from heavy, dark wood like mahogany or walnut, or wood that has been stained dark. The wood is often carved in elaborate designs, with details like ball or claw-foot legs. However, Queen Anne-style chairs favor smoother, curved shapes.

    Fabrics

    • Elegant fabrics such as velvet or silk are used in traditional chairs. Brocade is frequently seen on traditional chairs, as is tapestry. Solid colors and floral patterns are common, but not modern, geometric patterns.
