How to Make a Ramp That Attaches to Bunk Beds

Make bunk beds more fun for kids to get into by adding a ramp with a climbing rope to one side of the bed. Building a ramp for bunk beds is similar to constructing a ladder. For safety, foot rests are added along the length of the ramp for traction. This idea can also be adapted to outdoor play structures such as playgrounds or treehouses.

Things You'll Need

  • 3/4-inch plywood
  • Saw
  • 1 1/2-inch wood screws
  • 2-inch dowel
  • 2 ladder hooks
  • 3/4-inch manila rope
  • Eye bolt

Instructions

    • 1

Cut one piece of plywood to the desired length of the ramp and 3 feet wide. The length depends on the angle at which you install the ramp and the height of the bed. As the angle between the ramp and bed decreases, the length of the ramp must increase.

    • 2

Saw two more pieces of plywood the same length as the ramp but only 4 inches wide. These pieces will become the safety rails.

    • 3

Cut another piece of plywood to 36 inches long by 2 inches wide so you have one per linear foot along the ramp for the foot rests.

    • 4

Create three wooden blocks from the remaining plywood measuring 2 inches on each side and 3/4 inches deep.

    • 5

Screw the safety rails to the outside edges of the ramp with 1 1/2-inch wood screws, spaced 8 inches apart.

    • 6

Attach the foot rests every 12 inches along the ramp, using four 1 1/2-inch wood screws spaced evenly along each foot rest.

    • 7

Turn the ramp over to the back and screw the wooden blocks into the middle and on either end of the width of the ramp, 2 inches from the top, using two 1 1/2-inch wood screws per block.

    • 8

Screw the dowel on top of the wooden blocks on the back of the ramp with a single 1 1/2-inch wood screw per block. The dowel will hold the ladder hooks.

    • 9

Tie square knots every 12 inches along the length of the rope.

    • 10

Screw an eye bolt into the bed at the top of the ramp. Tie one of the free ends of the rope into the eye bolt.

    • 11

Insert the ends of two ladder hooks into the open space between the dowel and the back of the ramp.

    • 12

Hang the ramp from the edge of the top bunk by the ladder hooks.

    • 13

Drape the rope across the front of the ramp for climbing.
