How to Make a Bunkbed Slide

A bed slide can be a fun addition to your children’s bunk bed. Some bunk bed makers offer bed slide kits. But you can make your own for a lot less money and give your kids the excitement of literally sliding out of bed each morning. You can make a simple but safe bed slide for a child’s bunk bed using a preformed plastic slide from a home improvement or outdoor recreation store.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the bedroom to determine the amount of room you have for a slide. You can mount the slide at the side or end of the top bunk. Measure the height of the top bunk. Buy a preformed plastic slide of the appropriate length. Adjust the bunk bed height if needed.

    • 2

Drill two holes through the wooden sides of the top bunk’s frame in the size specified by the slide’s manufacturer. Drill matching holes through the slide’s top lip. If the slide’s top lip already has mounting holes, use them as a template to mark the spots to drill. Bolt the top of the slide securely to the bed frame.

If your bunk beds have metal angle frames, you must bolt a piece of 2-by-4 lumber to the frame bed to hold the slide. Cut the lumber to be longer than the slide is wide. Drill two holes through the lumber and bed frame and bolt the 2-by-4 section to the bed frame. Bolt the top of the slide to the lumber.

Secure the bottom end of the slide by driving two wood screws through the bottom lip into the floor. You don’t need to remove carpeting or floor covering.
