How to Build a Captain's Bed From a Daybed Frame

Create a captain’s bed from an existing daybed frame by using the daybed frame as a starting point. Using plywood, construct storage cubbyholes, or “cubbies,” to fit within the daybed frame. If the daybed has two levels as some daybeds do, remove the lower level frame and mattress, leaving only the twin-sized, larger, first level for the captain’s bed project. A captain’s bed is simply a bed that includes storage compartments underneath. In addition, the captain’s bed may be decorated with nautical objects to add the “feel of the sea.” Enlist the help of the lumber store to cut plywood, once you have measured.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the space under the sides of the daybed to determine the size of the plywood for the side cubbies. Measure the length and height of the space under the bed. Also, measure how deep the storage cubbies will extend under the bed.

Each side of the bed will require two long pieces of plywood for the top and bottom of the cubby. In addition, each side of the bed will require two end pieces and a centerpiece of plywood to which the top and bottom of the cubbies will connect. The centerpiece of wood separates the cubby storage spaces, and provides additional support for the top piece of wood.

    • 2

Measure the space under the head and foot of the daybed to determine the size of the plywood slats needed for the top and bottom cubbies.

    • 3

Purchase plywood from a lumber or home improvement store. Ask the store to “rip" the plywood according to the cubby measurements for the head, foot and side cubbies. Make sure to rip a top- and bottom-long piece of wood for each side of the bed. Also, make sure to rip three support boards for each cubby: one for each side and a centerpiece.

    • 4

Assemble each storage cubby by using screws or nails to attach the support pieces, first to the long cut intended to be the cubby bottom. Glue the support pieces to the bottom piece and allow the glue to dry. Repeat for each cubby.

    • 5

Attach the top long cut pieces to the supports for each cubby. Nail or screw the top pieces in place, and then secure with wood glue. Allow the glue to dry.

    • 6

Paint and decorate the cubbies using nautical colors, and perhaps a few nautical ornaments.

    • 7

Place the cubbies under the daybed into their designated areas. Attach the cubbies to the daybed frame with small bolts and nuts, if desired. However, the cubbies may simply be slid under the bed to rest on the floor.

    • 8

Remove the legs or supports of the daybed to allow the mattress and frame to rest directly upon the cubbies, if desired.
