Materials Needed:
- Fabric (enough for the bedskirt and extra for seam allowances)
- Elastic (1-2 inches wide, enough to go around the bed's perimeter plus extra for seam allowances)
- Measuring tape
- Scissors or rotary cutter and cutting mat
- Pins or sewing clips
- Sewing machine
- Thread
- Iron (optional)
Instructions:
1. Measure Your Bed:
- Measure the length and width of your mattress.
- Add 15-20 inches to the length and width for the bedskirt drop (depending on your desired length).
- Add seam allowances (usually 1 inch on all sides) to the measurements.
- Cut two pieces of fabric according to these measurements.
2. Hem the Bedskirt Pieces:
- Fold and press the edges of each fabric piece 1 inch inward on all sides.
- Stitch along the folded edges to create hems.
3. Attach Elastic to the Bedskirt:
- Cut the elastic to the perimeter length of your bed plus 4-5 inches for overlap.
- With the bedskirt pieces right side up, place the elastic along the top edge of one piece, matching the raw edges.
- Pin or clip the elastic in place, making sure it's evenly distributed and stretched slightly.
4. Stitch the Elastic:
- Using a zigzag or stretch stitch, stitch the elastic to the bedskirt, securing it in place.
5. Sew the Bedskirt Sides:
- Place both bedskirt pieces right sides together, matching the edges and aligning them to form the bedskirt.
- Sew along the side seams, from top to bottom, using a 1-inch seam allowance.
6. Trim the Corners:
- Trim the corners diagonally, about halfway between the stitching and the edge, to reduce bulk.
7. Optional Step (Pleating):
- If you want a gathered look, you can pleat the bedskirt at the top before stitching it to the elastic. Just make sure to distribute the pleats evenly.
8. Finish the Top Edge:
- Fold the top edge of the bedskirt down 1 inch inwards, hiding the elastic.
- Stitch along the folded edge to secure it in place.
That's it! Your elastic bedskirt is ready to be used. Enjoy your newly refreshed bedroom!
