How to Make Your Own Sofa From a Twin Mattress

Making a sofa from your twin mattress is a creative, low-cost solution if you don't want to spend a lot of cash on a convertible sleeper or are having space issues in a small home. It can also be used for extra space during a sleepover or to spruce up a college-bound kid's room. Attempt this project with twin-sized mattresses only; double, queen and king beds turned sofas take up too much space.

Instructions

    • 1

Raise your mattress by putting it on crates, risers or blocks. You can also put your twin-sized mattress on top of a frame and box spring. Choose a simple frame that doesn't include a headboard, foot board or wheels.

    • 2

Purchase bedding for your new twin-sized sofa that complements the room decor. Remove the mattress and put down the bed skirt that came with your bedding set. Don't allow the skirt to puddle on the floor. You might have to gather the material in the middle to make sure it's the right length before putting the mattress back down.

    • 3

Choose a fabric to put on your mattress. You can use the sheet from the mattress set whenever you use the couch as a bed, but during the day you might want a fabric that's a bit sturdier. Be creative--choose from painter's canvas, clothing fabric, blankets and comforters until you find the print, style and texture that suits you best.

Place the mattress on top of the bed skirt. Put the fitted sheet on the mattress (for guests that might sleep over), then put the fabric you've chosen on top. Arrange the fabric so it's even on all sides. Tuck excess fabric tightly between the bottom of the mattress and the top of the bed skirt.

Push the bed lengthwise against the wall. Purchase pillows in your favorite colors and patterns. Line them up along the back of your twin bed sofa. You can also make sofa back cushions by folding large foam pieces in half, tying the two halves together and covering the entire thing in fabric.
