How to Make a Tiki Hut Headboard

A tiki hut can evoke the feel of white sand beaches, bright blue skies and waves lapping gently on the shoreline. While many people aren't fortunate enough to live in a warm paradise, you can bring a bit of the island life to your home by creating a tropical-themed bedroom. Make your own tiki hut headboard that mounts directly to the wall to add to the theme.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure your bed's width and add 2 to 3 inches, as headboards often extend slightly beyond either side.

    • 2

Cut a piece of plywood to your desired width, using the measurement as a guide. Base the height on your personal preference, accounting for the fact that at least 2 feet will be behind the bed. Sand down the rough edges after cutting.

    • 3

Paint both sides of the plywood in a light tan sandy color. Let dry.

    • 4

Cut two pieces of bamboo to the exact length of the headboard. Apply a line of urethane adhesive to the top and bottom front of the plywood. Stick the bamboo pieces into place.

    • 5

Measure the height between the two attached bamboo pieces. Cut enough bamboo pieces of this measurement to vertically fill the space between the two horizontal pieces. Attach with urethane adhesive.

    • 6

Screw flush mounts into place on the back of the headboard and to the wall, after using a stud finder to locate a suitable spot. Slip the headboard into place on the flush mounts and slide the bed into place against the wall.
